Q. Why are we suddenly seeing so many children, many of them still of pre-school age, questioning their gender?
Fact: The promoters of transgenderism are much better at marketing, and there is “a contemporary wedding of marketing in the service of matters of sexuality.” The transgender issue has been framed as “not just one of many issues people should care about, but rather a uniquely pressing matter that requires solutions now” (Mark Regnerus), “the most urgent social justice issue of the 21st century” (Michael Cook)
Fact: Over the last few years many organizations have been mandating and legislating acceptance and accommodation of gender-variant persons. State schools invite guest speakers who are “gender variant.”
Fact: The issue has been popularized. “The No. 1 factor is the Internet. If you’re struggling to find out where you fit, the Internet is filled with things about gender dysphoria.” (Dr. Ken Zucker, one of the world’s foremost authorities on gender identity issues in children and adolescents). “When we ask, ‘When did you first learn about this label of gender dysphoria’, they’ll say, ‘Me and Mom watched Oprah.’ ” (Dr. Hayley Wood, a member of Zucker’s team)
Fact: It is now fashionable for parents to “embrace their diverse child. Parents who encourage their kids to change gender ‘are socially rewarded as wonderful and accepting.'” (Alice Dreger, a bioethicist and professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago)
Q. Should parents allow a young child to “socially transition” (dress and live as the opposite gender)?
Fact: Many children change their minds but struggle with changing back to their birth sex because of fear of being teased and of having to admit they were wrong.
