In the News — “Conversion therapy” bans

“Conversion therapy” is being banned in one country after another, most recently in Canada, and the United Kingdom has announced its intention to do so as well.

Canada

“Canada has formally banned conversion therapy, the widely discredited practice aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Legislation that makes it illegal to provide, promote and profit off conversion therapy was officially approved on Wednesday [December 8, 2021] and will take effect in 30 days, on Jan. 7.”

The Canadian law is the latest instance of a growing global effort to eradicate conversion therapy, . . .”

The United Kingdom

“The United Kingdom is a global leader on LGBT rights and is committed to banning the coercive and abhorrent practice of conversion therapy.” (The Closed Consultation Banning Conversion Therapy, updated on December 9, 2021)

Germany

“Germany’s legislature on Thursday [May 7, 2020] passed a ban on the advertising and practice of so-called gay conversion therapy for people under age 18, joining a growing list of countries and local jurisdictions that have moved to prohibit the debunked practice in minors.

“Germany is the fifth nation to pass such a ban, following Malta, Ecuador, Brazil and Taiwan. . .”

The United States

In the United States, 20 states and the District of Columbia, and a number of cities have banned the practice for minors and some members of Congress have attempted to prohibit the practice federally.

BARBARA’S MISSION

Young people everywhere are being bombarded day in and day out in our super-sexualized society by messages that both trivialize sex and encourage sexual activity. These messages are hurting our young people. Yet as Christians we are failing to give our teens a picture of healthy sexuality; we leave them on their own to figure things out, often with disastrous results – physical, emotional, and social. It doesn’t need to be this way, and it breaks my heart to see the pain resulting from our lack of action.
