What is sex for?

Teens never think about sex. Really? Is this a true statement? Aren’t we constantly being told that in the teen years sex is always on an adolescent’s mind? After all, “their hormones are raging!”

But let’s pause for a moment to set the record straight: Not as many teens are having sex as is commonly assumed.

For the youth leader who said, “Teens never think about sex” the emphasis was on “think.” Many teens don’t THINK about sex. They don’t consider the consequences, present or future, of sexual decisions they make right now.

Let’s begin thinking about sex by asking this question: “What is sex for?” and by looking at some of the answers being given. These are actual quotes from ordinary individuals, professionals, organizations, and sex educators. Do you agree with these answers? What do your teens think?

What is sex for?

1: “To relieve sexual tension, fulfill natural desires.”

 2. “To make babies.”

3. “To show that you care for someone.”

To be continued …

BARBARA’S MISSION

Young people everywhere are being bombarded day in and day out in our super-sexualized society by messages that both trivialize sex and encourage sexual activity. These messages are hurting our young people. Yet as Christians we are failing to give our teens a picture of healthy sexuality; we leave them on their own to figure things out, often with disastrous results – physical, emotional, and social. It doesn’t need to be this way, and it breaks my heart to see the pain resulting from our lack of action.
