Abortion is no longer a constitutional right in the United States and, according to the media, everyone thinks this is very bad news. This is the case not only in the United States but in many other parts of the world as well. According to U.S. President Biden a fundamental right has been overturned. According to Harvard Law School panelists, women will die — because of limited access to abortion. Do most Americans agree with the view of President Biden and the Harvard panelists? Should abortion be a right?
From media coverage, one would barely be aware that anyone disagrees. The media “stood with President Biden and the three dissenting justices” in the Dobbs decision.
What about the baby?
The overturning of Roe v. Wade was a constitutional issue. Still, it is inconceivable that in all the discussion and debate, and in media coverage of the event, there was almost no mention of the other human being involved in abortion — the unborn baby.
President Biden
President Biden’s statement never mentioned the unborn child — except to refer derisively to a “rapist’s child”and “the child of incest.”
Harvard Law School
The only indication in the Harvard Law School debate that there is a baby involved was a comment in passing: “when some people believe life begins.”
Discuss with your teens:
- Do you agree that abortion should be a right? Why, or why not?
- How do you feel about people ignoring the unborn baby in talking about abortion?
- Why do you think there is so little concern for the baby?
